Book Circle: Bhagavad Gīta
The Bhagavad Gīta, encapsulated in the great Indian epic, the Mahābhārata, is one of the most foundational texts that informs the practice of yoga today. The Gīta, or ‘the Song of God,’ begins at the preface of a war that must be fought. It is the intimate conversation of Kṛṣṇa (Viṣṇu incarnate) speaking to the hero, Arjuna, and in so doing, speaking to the everyman, to each one of us. Kṛṣṇa’s response to Arjuna’s doubts and woe is a guidebook to questions we all may ask about how to live well in the world, especially at its most challenging and transformative junctures. In Book Circle, we will motivate and inspire one another to read, investigate, and integrate the teachings of the Gīta into our everyday lives. Classes will begin with a short review of the week’s reading, which will provide context to our discussion via referencing the Mahābhārata, as well as, other sources. We will also clarify Sanskrit terminology along the way. You will be provided with a full English translation of the Gīta, as well as recommendations for additional translations and commentaries. We will consider the main themes of Kṛṣṇa’s teachings, reflecting on their meaning, significance, and relevance in modern day. Book Circle will focus on creating a space to gather together, engage with the text, and share our experience with it as a virtual community. We will complete the 18 chapters as a group. Book Circle will introduce us to new people with similar interests and offer a platform to connect in the mind space.
