Prāṇāyāma and Dhyāna
This course will focus on the interplay between prāṇāyāma and dhyāna, the fourth and seventh limbs of Patañjali’s Aṣṭāṅga Yoga System. Often translated as “breath control” or “breath practice,” we will take it a step further and see how breath is simply the tangible gateway into the intangible world of prāṇa. From there, we will understand how to set up the right situation for dhyāna to happen. The word “meditation” alone does a subpar and incomplete job of explaining what this seventh limb is about. It is often better described as a “state of absorption” or “a merging or union with the object of meditation.” We will use prāṇāyāma practices as our objects of meditation. The aim of this course will be to explore and experience the edges of this state of dhyāna that we may each become truly Self-absorbed ;)
For students who have an established āsana practice and familiarity with yama & niyama. No prior prāṇāyāma experience necessary.
